Supporting a changing NHS

The Nuffield Trust recently published its report on the future of pathology services. It reviews the expected changes being wrought by digital and genomic technology on pathology services in the NHS.  In it the authors conclude that "productivity depends on laboratories being as efficient as possible while pathologists have the time and resources to work with clinical teams and patients to ensure the right tests are undertaken at the right time and that appropriate action follows. This requires ongoing training and development for the wider clinical community as well as effective information and informatics support."

Since this meeting was first held in 2014, the use of digital pathology has steadily been gaining ground across the NHS.  This momentum has been due to a number of successful pathology projects and the growing body of evidence showing that the predicted benefits (including accessing worldwide expertise, reduction in lab costs, increased workflow efficiency, greater inter-connectivity, effective training / education methods and improved decision making) are being realised.  The technology is having a measurable impact on patients.

National Pathology Programme
